Based on the reactions we've observed, it appears that some people simply enjoy being confrontational, regardless of the context. I’m not attempting to throw hand grenades or generate extreme reactions, this is a genuine concern for our immediate community and the greater one.
What we do here is based purely on the visual so I think it's right that we judge on that basis. My question is quite simple, should be encouraging obese models? A sensitive subject I know, but one that any responsible community should be concerned about.
How often do we see curvy model or the like advertised? How often do we see images of models that are clearly obese?
In 2021, 26% of adults in England were obese. A higher proportion of men than women were either overweight or obese (69% compared with 59%), so we guys are even worse!
Obesity is a major public health problem in England and globally. In adults, overweight and obesity are associated with life-limiting conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.
The burden on the NHS due to obesity and related illnesses is well recognised. The monetary cost each year, uplifted for inflation, was estimated at £6.1 billion in 2019 and it’s obviously much greater today and going up all the time.
There will inevitably be some “chubby chasers” amongst our photographers and GWC’s, but as a responsible community what do we think?
