We have been working with another photographer/performer from AW and finally I can get the camera off the tripod. But when your camera weighs about 5lbs keeping it steady much less focused is a physical challenge. So I made a slider from the patio door system that's waiting around, and although it was a monorail version it worked not very well. A dual rail and practice it might run smoother, it can take the weight with a little oil.
Here I'm using a 25mm prime lens on a BM Ursa Mini Pro. So about 15 ft away full shot to 5 ft close enough for another camera to take over.
Eldelkrone make a nice slider, and the larger Neewer are cheaper, but neither slide very far. Skates look possible but without runners unlikely to succeed, and then theres the steady cam, some nice looking vests and stabilizers for 1K that can take the weight, but what pitfalls are there. And is there a 10ft slider in the realistically affordable range.
I don't see steady cams as alternatives to rails/sliders, obviously, I see a slider carrying the camera to a predetermined beauty spot slow and steady, and the other Wes Craven scary music and all that fluidity.
Has anyone made anything that works them selves, next I'm trying the cement mixer quadpod base and a pole wont really slide but a steady smooth swing left/right in/out with a pan should work. What about 'see saws' or chains from above making an hand held arc.
The product that were making in this instance is different to the purely pornographic, here I want a more cinematic feel where the camera takes you in and around the subject, more 180 deg coverage. A steady cam taking over from a slider probably.
Any thoughts on this careful and potentially expensive choice would be welcome.
